The CIBERFES is an independent Research Centre as regards scientific management, although it constitutes a thematic area in the CIBER, a unique research structure in Spain in the field of biomedical research, with great scientific potential.
The top decision-making body at CIBER is the Governing Body, which is made up of three representatives of the ISCIII and by one institutional representative of each of the institutions in the consortium. This is presided over by the Director of the ISCIII and it meets every six months.
The Permanent Commission constitutes an executive committee (formed by the ISCIII and eight members of the Governing Body, renewed every six months) meeting more often in order to reach speedier decisions in issues whose very nature means they cannot wait to be approved at the Governing Body.
In the thematic area of Frailty and Healthy Ageing, the basic and functional units are made up of the 20 research groups.
From the scientific standpoint, the organisational structure of CIBERFES is based on the research groups belonging to this and its work revolves around its Research Programmes and Horizontal Programmes, with a coordinator for each Programme belonging to the Management Committee.
Scientific decisions are made by the Scientific Director, advised by the Steering Committee and the External Scientific Committee. The Steering Committee, presided over by the Scientific Director, is made up of the coordinators of the programmes and the manager of the CIBER.
